Who is set to take home the Heisman?

As the 2022 college football season continues, there have already been discussions on who will be this year’s Heisman Trophy winner. Below are some of the top players who are predicted to take home the Heisman Trophy.


Tennessee Volunteers senior quarterback Hendon Hooker is currently the top candidate for the Heisman Trophy. Before Hooker was a quarterback for the Vols, he was at Virginia Tech. While at Virginia Tech, Hooker had a total completion percentage of 126.4 for 2,894 yards in the 2019-2020 season. As a Tennessee Volunteer, Hooker is 15th in yards with 2,533, tied 16th in touchdowns with 21, tied seventh in interceptions with two, and has a quarterback rating of 89.1 (fifth). Hooker has been able to lead the Volunteers to a number five spot in the college football playoff rankings.


Next is Ohio State junior quarterback C.J. Stroud, who has led Ohio State to a 9-0 record and a college football playoff ranking of two. In his career, Stroud has completed 486 of 690 passes with a completion percentage of 70.4. Stroud has currently thrown for a total of 6,888 yards. In 2022, Stroud is 20th in yards (2,453), second in touchdowns (29) and has a quarterback rating of 91.1 (first). In the game against Northwestern University, Stroud showed off his rushing abilities by setting up the Buckeyes for a touchdown with a 44-yard run.


Current quarterback for the University of Southern California, sophomore Caleb Williams, is also in the running for the Heisman Trophy. Before attending USC, Williams was a quarterback for the University of Oklahoma where he had a completion percentage of 64.5 and a total of 1,912 yards. With USC, Williams is ninth in yards with 2,742, tied third in touchdowns (28) and has a quarterback rating of 85.4 (ninth). Williams has led USC to an 8-1 record and a college football playoff ranking of nine.


One of the running backs on the list to win the Heisman this year is University of Michigan junior, Blake Corum. In his career with the Wolverines, Corum has a total of 369 rushing attempts for 2,216 yards. For the 2022 season, Corum currently has 199 rushing attempts for 1,187 yards, a total of 16 touchdowns and an average of six yards per rush attempt. Michigan is currently 9-0 and is ranked third in the college football playoff ranking.


The next candidate that is no stranger to the Heisman Trophy list is junior University of Alabama quarterback Bryce Young. In his career, Young has completed 550 of 841 passes with a completion percentage of 65.4. In the 2022 season, Young has currently thrown for 2,234 yards (32nd), recorded 19 touchdowns (tied 23rd) with four interceptions (tied 20th), and has a quarterback rating of 83.7 (11th). Despite the loss against LSU, Young was able to keep the game alive with a 41-yard touchdown pass. Alabama is currently 7-2.


These are just a few of the many candidates. Others include North Carolina quarterback Drake Maye, Oregon quarterback Bo Nix, TCU quarterback Max Duggan, and Illinois running back Chase Brown.


The Heisman Trophy ceremony will take place a week after the conference championships at 8 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 10.
