Empire State of Mess: What's Going on With the Yankees and Mets?

As we approach the middle of the 2025 Major League Baseball season, it’s no secret that the vibes are off in New York. Let’s talk about what’s been going wrong for the ball clubs in the Big Apple.

The Yankees: Bronx Bombers or Just Bombing?

The New York Yankees entered 2025 with high expectations and kicked things off on the right foot. Despite early injuries, the offense was hot, the pitching staff was clicking, and the vibes were high. But ever since June rolled around, the wheels on the train have been wobbling.

The Bronx Bombers haven’t been the same since they stepped into Fenway Park earlier this month to face their greatest rival, the Boston Red Sox. Since that series, the Bombers are 4-6 over their last ten games, including a brutal three-game scoreless drought that stretched across 30 innings. Not only did they get swept by the Red Sox, but they lost three out of four at home to the Los Angeles Angels.

Their biggest issue? The offense. The Yankees have been ice cold with runners in scoring position, hitting just .167 as a team in these spots. If Aaron Judge isn’t launching a homerun, it feels like the rest of the lineup is just waiting around. On the flip side, the pitching has been solid – Yankees arms have posted an impressive 2.20 ERA over this ten game stretch. However, it’s hard to win games if the lineup isn’t giving you any run support.

The Mets: New Season, Same Story

If the Yankees seem disappointing, the Mets have somehow outdone them and are predictably disappointing. Each season, the New York Mets are filled with hope and redemption, only to fall off the wagon a few months in. The Mets thought Juan Soto might be the game changer they needed, and while they had a promising start, the Blue and Orange have fallen into the June slump once again.

During this incredibly rough ten-game stretch, the Mets are 2-8, including a seven-game losing streak and back-to-back sweeps by both the Tampa Bay Rays and Atlanta Braves. The offense has struggled, hitting only .215 as a team, and a big part of that is due to their stars going cold. Juan Soto is batting just .188 and Francisco Lindor isn’t far behind at a .184 over this span.

Surprisingly, their offensive struggles have not been the Met’s biggest issue. It’s the pitching and defense that have really let them down. From blown leads to bullpen meltdowns, they have been outscored by 35 runs over this span and post a 6.06 ERA, the second-worst in MLB. Even when the offense is producing runs, the pitching and defense are unable to hold down opposing teams.

For the Yankees, it’s all about rediscovering that early-season magic and finding offensive support beyond Aaron Judge. As for the Mets, they need consistency and stability – fewer collapses, and playing to their potential. Either way, New York baseball needs a serious vibe check.

The Yankees are barely holding onto first place in the AL East at 46-34, just one game ahead of the hot Tampa Bay Rays. Meanwhile, the Mets have fallen from the top spot in the NL East and  are now tied with the Philadelphia Phillies, holding a 46-34 record.

Hopefully, both clubs can turn things around and bring hope back into the hearts of NY baseball fans before they face off in the Subway Series next week, for the second time this season.
