As the second half of the season begins, the drivers look to have been well-rested during these past three weeks. Some of them took the time to unwind and relax with friends, family, and significant others. While others ventured on some great adventures.
DJs and Dances:
During the summer break, going to music festivals and enjoying live music is a common occurrence among many drivers. It was wheels up for McLaren driver Lando Norris and Red Bull driver Max Verstappen after the Belgium Grand Prix. Verstappen and Norris took a helicopter in order to travel to the Tomorrowland Music Festival that was held in Belgium. The pair landed just in time to catch the set of DJ and performer at the festival Martin Garrix. This would not be the first time the duo has hung out during a break in between seasons. Norris had visited Garrix in New York during the break before the Canadian Grand Prix.
Verstappen and Norris might have gotten the VIP treatment at Tomorrowland but they were not the only drivers in attendance during Garrix’s setlist. Mercedes driver George Russel and newly introduced AlphaTauri driver Daniel Ricciardo were also seen there as well with their significant others. Russel posted on his Instagram page how he bumped into Ricciardo during the break and thanked Garrix for the invite.
Whether it was backstage or in the crowd the F1 drivers sure know how to enjoy a music festival.
The Three Bs; Beaches, Boats, and Bikes?:
While some drivers enjoyed live music, others opted to have a more relaxed yet adventurous summer break. Charles Leclerc spent time with his younger brother and F2 driver Arthur relaxing on a boat and jet skiing as well. Not only did Leclerc enjoy his time in the sun relaxing under the warm sun but he also released another song on Spotify titled “MON23(1:3)”. This would be his third song released after his first two “AUSGP23(1:1)” AND “MIA23”(1:2).
Williams driver Alexander Albon had the same idea when he decided to spend part of his break in Mallorca with his significant other Lily Muni He. He also accompanied Muni He to one of her golf tournaments which is not uncommon since Albon has joked around about being a “WAG” during those tournaments.
Hitting the brakes on their lifestyle and enjoying the few moments of stillness is what most drivers would have in mind when it comes to the summer break, however, Alfa Romeo driver Valtterri Bottas had something else in mind. Bottas and his wife are known for competing in bicycle marathons during the offseason so it was no surprise he spent his break traveling and bicycling. Bottas traveled to Steamboat Springs, Colorado where he trained and competed for a 100- mile race. After all that hard work and dedication he managed to finish in 20th place out of 1,000 competitors.
Whether it was enjoying live music, relaxing on the beach or continuing the adrenaline filled life F1 drivers sure know how to spend a summer break. As the second half of the season begins there are many races to look forward to. For example, the infamous Italian Grand Prix in Monza and the newly introduced Las Vegas Grand Prix. The season finale soon approaches and soon we will know who will be the next World Champion this 2023 season.
