Local F1 fan suddenly talking about IMSA? Logan Sargeant is why.

The world of motorsports includes countless different series, all of them with their own unique rules and regulations. Formula 1 is one of the most well-known racing series, its drivers rising to mindblowing levels of fame. Because they become so well known, when an F1 driver moves to a different racing series, their fans are always close behind.

Logan Sargeant is an American-born racing driver with an impressive career in the lower levels of formula racing. In 2023, he got called up to race for Williams Racing in F1 after being part of the Williams Driver Academy for a year.

His rookie season in F1 wasn’t the kindest to him, often fighting the bottom 10 to make it into the points. But his continued hard work paid off at the United States Grand Prix in Austin, Texas. In October of 2023, Sargeant made history as the first American driver to score points in Formula 1 in 30 years.

Following his maiden points finish, Sargeant’s performance for the rest of the year resulted in a contract extension with Williams for the 2024 F1 season. The bulk of Sargeant’s fanbase is ride-or-die for the driver, so they were happy to celebrate the news.

Coming into the 2024 season, Sargeant was confident in his growth from the year before and ready to fight for more points. Unfortunately, the Australian Grand Prix brought his momentum to a screeching halt. After his teammate Alex Albon crashed in free practice, team principal James Vowles made the shocking decision to give Sargeant’s car to Albon for the remainder of the weekend.

With Australia as the third race of the season, it didn’t set a great tone moving forward. Sargeant faced a variety of challenges, including racing with old parts, having a heavier car, and not receiving upgrades at the same time as his teammate. Still coming to grips with the car, Sargeant also had more off-track excursions and crashes than some of his competitors. Combine these with the pressure of adjusting to the lifestyle of what many consider the pinnacle of motorsport, and Sargeant was not having a great year.

Some fans thought Williams would let Sargeant go during the F1 summer break, but he returned to drive at the Dutch Grand Prix in Zandvoort, the first race back from the break. Right after the race weekend, which included a fiery crash in free practice 3, Williams dropped Sargeant for the remainder of the season.

Sargeant seemed to disappear for the rest of the 2024 season, rarely posting what his fans affectionately dubbed “signs of life” on social media. At the beginning of 2025, it was announced that he would be racing in the European Le Mans Series (ELMS) with IDEC Sport Racing for the season. However, not long after, the team shared that Sargeant would not be racing with them for the season, but wished him all the best.

The rest of the first half of the year passed in virtual radio silence once again. But on August 13, it was announced that Sargeant signed with a new management team, which was quickly followed by the news that he would be competing in the last two IMSA races of 2025 with PR1 Mathiasen Motorsports in the LMP2 category.

Following the announcement, Sargeant shared that at the beginning of the year, he had decided to ultimately take a step back from racing – and his ELMS seat – to reset before moving forward. Endurance racing is something Sargeant has done before and enjoyed, making his return to motorsport promising.

He had an impressive debut weekend, showing strong pace and skillful racecraft. Sargeant also worked well with the other drivers on his team, getting the car up to P2 in the LMP2 standings during one of his stints.

As the last race of the IMSA season approaches on October 11, fans are eager to see where Sargeant chooses to take his career next.
