Spring Breakout Games: Who to Watch

MLB’s inaugural Spring Breakout games are from March 14-17, they will feature games between all 30 teams and top prospects from each team around the league. Here’s who to watch from each game and where they rank both in their respective team’s farm system and on MLB Pipeline’s Top 100. These games will be a great way to get a preview of the future of the game and see the superstars of tomorrow in action!  


*Note: “the Reds and Cardinals will play a pair each because of the uneven number of clubs in each state” (MLB.com). 


Thursday, March 14

Cincinnati Reds @ Texas Rangers

Reds:  

Cincinnati's number two prospect (number thirty-four on MLB Pipeline) right-handed pitcher Rhett Lowder, who is sure to catch some attention, will take on the Rangers; along with MLB Pipeline number 67 (Reds’ number three) prospect shortstop Edwin Arroyo, and Reds’ number six prospect infielder Sal Stewart.  

 

Rangers:  

Rangers’ number three prospect shortstop Sebastian Walcott, (number 71 on MLB Pipeline) will take the field with MLB Pipeline number 88 prospect; number four in the Rangers’ system, right-handed pitcher Brock Porter, and outfielder Anthony Gutierrez, (who ranks as number seven in the Rangers’ farm system).

Baltimore Orioles @ Pittsburgh Pirates

Orioles:  

MLB Pipeline’s number one top prospect shortstop Jackson Holliday will have all eyes on him during this matchup, but he isn’t the only highly touted prospect in the Orioles’ system on their breakout game roster. They also have MLB Pipeline number seventeen prospect catcher Samuel Basallo (number two in the Orioles farm system), and corner infielder Coby Mayo, who ranks number 30 on MLB Pipeline and number four in the Orioles’ system. All three of these highly touted players will be exciting to watch as they take on the Pirates talented farm system.  

 

Pirates:  

Right-handed pitcher Paul Skenes, MLB Pipeline number three and Pirates number one prospect, will be at the center of attention for the Pirates. They have three other prospects ranked on MLB Pipeline that made the roster for the breakout series. The roster also features MLB Pipeline number 44, Pirates number two prospect second baseman Termarr Johnson, MLB Pipeline number 82, Pirates number four prospect left-handed pitcher Anthony Solometo, and MLB Pipeline number 93, Pirates number five, right-handed pitcher Bubba Chandler. Between the Pirates pitching and the Orioles position players, this series will be a must watch.

Friday, March 15 

Miami Marlins @ St. Louis Cardinals

Marlins: 

The Marlins only have one prospect ranked on MLB Pipeline that will be taking part in the Spring Breakout series, but they do have other highly ranked prospects for their system that will be playing. Most notably, they have right-handed pitcher Noble Meyer, who ranks number one in their farm system and number 57 on MLB Pipeline. They also have their number two farm system prospect, left-handed pitcher Thomas White, and their number four prospect, outfielder Victor Mesa Jr. 


Cardinals: 

The Cardinals will have their number one prospect, shortstop Masyn Winn, who ranks number 43 on MLB Pipeline. Winn will be joined by the Cardinals number two and three prospects. Right-handed pitchers Tink Hence, who ranks as number 64 on MLB Pipeline, and Tekoah Roby, who ranks as number 99 on MLB Pipeline. 


All three of these highly touted prospects will be fun to watch as this exciting match up unfolds at 2:05 EST on MLB Network. 


Washington Nationals @ New York Mets

Nationals: 

The Nationals will have their numbers one, two, and three system prospects taking the field, who all rank in the top 50 on MLB Pipeline. Their number one system prospect, outfielder Dylan Crews, who ranks as number seven on MLB Pipeline, will be joined by number two system prospect outfielder James Wood (number fourteen on MLB Pipeline), and number three system prospect, third baseman Brady House, who ranks as number 48 on MLB Pipeline. All three of these exciting prospects will be fun to watch as they take on the Mets. 


Mets: 

The Mets will have their number one farm system prospect shortstop Jett Williams, who ranks number 45 on MLB Pipeline. Williams will be joined by three other MLB Pipeline ranked prospects; starting with Mets number two prospect (number 53 on MLB Pipeline) outfielder Drew Gilbert. Their number three system prospect will also take part in this exciting matchup. Luisangel Acuña, who ranks number 66 on MLB Pipeline, and number four Mets prospect, outfielder Ryan Clifford (97 on MLB Pipeline), will also take the field.

San Diego Padres @ Seattle Mariners

Padres:  

The Padres have a star-studded roster headed to the Spring Breakout game against Seattle. Headlined by number one system prospect that ranks as number eight on MLB Pipeline, catcher Ethan Salas. They also have their number two system prospect, shortstop/outfielder Jackson Merrill, who ranks on MLB Pipeline at number 12, their number three system prospect who ranks as number 36 on MLB Pipeline, left-handed pitcher Robby Snelling, and their number four system prospect (number 56 on MLB Pipeline), right-handed pitcher Dylan Lesko. These aren’t the only highly touted prospects that will be wearing Padres’ jerseys at the breakout game, but they are definitely the biggest names to watch for San Diego.  

 

Mariners:  

The Mariners also have quite the talented roster that will face off against San Diego. Starting with their number one system prospect who is number 37 on MLB Pipeline, middle infielder Cole Young. They also have MLB Pipeline number 38 prospect, who is number two in their farm system, catcher Harry Ford. Lastly, they have their number three system prospect, who ranks at number 87 on MLB Pipeline, shortstop/ second baseman Colt Emerson.

Chicago White Sox @ Chicago Cubs

White Sox:  

The White Sox only have one MLB Pipeline ranked prospect headed to the Spring Breakout, but he’s ranked at number nine, and number one in the White Sox system, it is shortstop Colson Montgomery. They also will be sending their farm system’s number three prospect, third baseman Bryan Ramos, and number four system prospect, catcher Edgar Quero. 

 

Cubs:  

The Cubs farm system has a loaded roster that will be playing in the Breakout Game. They will have Six MLB Pipeline ranked prospects that are all in the top ten in their farm system. Starting with their number one prospect who ranks in at number 16 on MLB Pipeline, outfielder Pete Crow-Armstrong. They also have their number two overall prospect, right-handed pitcher Cade Horton, who ranks at number 26 on MLB Pipeline. Also, they will have their number three outfielder Owen Caissie and number five shortstop/second baseman Matt Shaw, prospects who rank at numbers 47 and 54 on MLB Pipeline, respectively. If that wasn’t an impressive roster already, they also have their number six ranked prospect outfielder Kevin Alcántara, who ranks in at number 65 on MLB Pipeline, and their number seven system prospect second baseman James Triantos, who ranks on MLB Pipeline at number 73.

San Francisco Giants @ Oakland Athletics

Giants:  

The Giants are only sending one MLB Pipeline ranked prospect and he’s ranked at number 96, and number four in the San Francisco system, it is outfielder/ first baseman Bryce Eldridge. They will also have their number five system prospect in attendance, shortstop Walker Martin. They will also be sending their number six system prospect, outfielder Rayner Arias.  

 

A’s: 

Like the Giants, the A’s also only have one MLB Pipeline ranked prospect on their roster for the breakout game: it is their number one farm system prospect shortstop Jacob Wilson, who comes in at number 68 on MLB Pipeline. They will also have shortstop Darell Hernaiz, who ranks at number five in their farm system, and catcher Daniel Susac, who ranks at number six in their farm system.

Saturday March 16

Atlanta Braves @ Boston Red Sox

Braves:  

The Braves won’t have any MLB Pipeline ranked prospects, but they won’t have any shortage of talent. They will have their number three system prospect, right-handed pitcher Spencer Schwellenbach, their number five system prospect right-handed pitcher Owen Murphy, and their number six prospect, shortstop Nacho Alvarez Jr. taking the field against Boston.  

 

Red Sox: 

The Red Sox will have four MLB Pipeline ranked prospects that are all the top four in their farm system. Headlining the Red Sox Breakout Roster is shortstop Marcelo Mayer, who ranks at number 15 on MLB Pipeline. Joining Mayer is outfielder Roman Anthony, who is number two in the Red Sox farm system and number 24 on MLB Pipeline. Additionally, they will have catcher Kyle Teel, number 3 in the Red Sox system and number 40 on MLB Pipeline, and they will also have outfielder/ shortstop Ceddanne Rafaela who is the number four prospect in the system and number 78 on MLB Pipeline.

Philadelphia Phillies @ Detroit Tigers

Phillies:  

The Phillies won’t have any MLB Pipeline ranked prospects taking the field at their Breakout match-up, but they will have plenty of talent present. They will have their number two system prospect, right-handed pitcher Mick Abel, number three system prospect, third baseman Aidan Miller, and number four system prospect, outfielder Justin Crawford.  

 

Tigers:  

The Tigers will have two MLB Pipeline ranked prospects on their roster for the game. Headlined by their number one system prospect, outfielder Max Clark, who ranks at number 13 on MLB Pipeline. Along with Clark, they will have MLB Pipeline ranked number 60 prospect, second/ third baseman Jace Jung, who is ranked fourth in the Tigers’ system. Detroit also has number five system prospect right-handed pitcher Ty Madden on the roster for the game as well.

Toronto Blue Jays @ New York Yankees

Blue Jays:  

Headlined by the number three prospect in the Toronto system, shortstop Arjun Nimmala, the Blue Jays will send an exciting and talented roster of prospects to face off against the Yankees, despite none of them ranking on MLB Pipeline. They will send left-handed pitcher Brandon Barrieria, who ranks in the farm system at number four. Joining Nimmala and Barriera will be the number five system prospect, shortstop Leo Jimenez.  

 

Yankees:  

The Yankees will have three prospects that all rank on MLB Pipeline, starting with their number two system prospect, who ranks number 84 on MLB Pipeline, outfielder Spencer Jones. Joining Jones will be number three system prospect shortstop Roderick Arias, who ranks at number 86 on MLB Pipeline. The last Pipeline ranked prospect, who comes in at number 96, on the Yankees breakout roster is right-handed pitcher Chase Hampton, who ranks in at number four in the Yankees’ system.

Tampa Bay Rays @  Minnesota Twins

Rays:  

The Rays will be sending three of their top prospects that rank on MLB Pipeline. Headlining their star-studded roster is third baseman/ shortstop Junior Caminero, who is their number one system prospect, and comes in at number four on MLB Pipeline. Also partaking in this exciting game will be number two Rays prospect, shortstop Carson Williams, who ranks on MLB Pipeline at number 20. Joining Caminero and Williams is MLB Pipeline number 58 prospect, first baseman, Xavier Isaac, who is number four in the Rays’ farm system.  

 

Twins:  

Opposing the Rays, is a talented roster of Twins prospects, led by their number one system prospect that ranks at number 10 on MLB Pipeline, outfielder Walker Jenkins. Also taking the field in this exciting matchup is MLB Pipeline number 18 prospect, shortstop Brooks Lee, who is number two in the Minnesota system. Joining Jenkins and Lee is the number three prospect in the Twins’ farm system is Emmanuel Rodriguez, who checks in at number 42 on MLB Pipeline rankings. Rounding out the headliners of the Twins Breakout Roster is outfielder Gabriel Gonzalez, who ranks number four in the Twins farm system and number 79 on MLB Pipeline.

Los Angeles Dodgers @ Los Angeles Angels

Dodgers:  

The Dodgers have just one MLB Pipeline ranked prospect, but they still have plenty of talent to keep your eye on. Their number one system prospect is catcher/ first baseman Dalton Rushing, who ranks at number 75 on MLB Pipeline. Also taking the field for the Spring Breakout game is their number four system prospect, outfielder Josue De Paula, and their number eight system prospect, left-handed pitcher Jackson Ferris.  

 

Angels:  

While they don’t have an MLB Pipeline prospect attending the Breakout game, they also still have talented prospects to watch. Headlining the roster for the Angels is their number two system prospect, outfielder Nelson Rada. Joining Rada is number three system prospect right-handed pitcher Caden Dana, and number four system prospect shortstop Kyren Paris.

Cleveland Guardians @ Cincinnati Reds

Guardians:  

The Guardians will have two prospects in attendance ranked on MLB Pipeline. Headlined by their number one system prospect, outfielder Chase DeLauter, who ranks at number 31 on MLB Pipeline. Joining him will be number two Cleveland prospect that ranks at number 59 on MLB Pipeline, first baseman Kyle Manzardo. Also taking the field for the Guardians will be outfielder Jaison Chourio, who comes in at number six in the Guardians farm system.  

 

Reds:  

Cincinnati's number two prospect (number thirty-four on MLB Pipeline) right-handed pitcher Rhett Lowder, who is sure to catch some attention, will take on the Rangers along with MLB Pipeline number 67 (Reds’ number three) prospect shortstop Edwin Arroyo and Reds’ number six prospect infielder Sal Stewart.

Arizona Diamondbacks @ Colorado Rockies

Diamondbacks:  

Leading the charge for the DBacks in this Spring Breakout match-up is number one system prospect shortstop Jordan Lawler, who checks in at number 11 on MLB Pipeline. Also on the roster is MLB Pipeline number 74 prospect and number two in the Arizona farm system is shortstop Tommy Troy. Joining them will be number three system prospect outfielder Druw Jones, who ranks at number 78 on MLB Pipeline.  

 

Rockies:  

The Rockies will have a loaded Breakout game roster, headlined by their number one farm system prospect that ranks at number 28 on MLB Pipeline, shortstop/ second baseman Adael Amador. Also on the roster is the number two system prospect, right-handed pitcher Chase Dollander, who ranks 52nd on MLB Pipeline. Joining Amador and Dollander is outfielder Yanquiel Fernandez, who is third in the Rockies farm system and number 72 on MLB Pipeline. Additionally, they will have number 81 MLB Pipeline prospect, outfielder Jordan Beck, who comes in at number four in the Colorado system

Sunday March 17: 

Houston Astros @ St. Louis Cardinals

Astros:  

Houston will not have any MLB Pipeline ranked prospects in this Breakout game, but that doesn't mean that they are short on talent in their farm system. They will have their number one system prospect, outfielder Jacob Melton in attendance along with their number two system prospect, outfielder Luis Baez, and number three system prospect, right-handed pitcher Spencer Arrighetti.  

 

Cardinals:  

The Cardinals will have their number one prospect, shortstop Masyn Winn, who ranks number 43 on MLB Pipeline. Winn will be joined by the Cardinals number two and three prospects. Right-handed pitchers Tink Hence, who ranks as number 64 on MLB Pipeline, and Tekoah Roby, who ranks as number 99 on MLB Pipeline.

Brewers:  

The Brewers have three MLB Pipeline ranked prospects on their roster for the Spring Breakout Game match-up. Headlining the roster is number two system prospect right-handed pitcher Jacob Misiorowski, who ranks on MLB Pipeline at number 33. Also on the roster is number three system prospect, who is number 35 on MLB Pipeline, catcher Jeferson Quero. Joining Misiorowski and Quero is number 46 MLB Pipeline prospect third baseman Tyler Black, who ranks at number four in the Milwaukee system.  

 

Royals:  

The Royals only have one MLB Pipeline ranked prospect on their Spring Breakout roster; he is the number one prospect in the KC system, catcher Blake Mitchell. Joining Mitchell is the number three system prospect, third baseman Cayden Wallace, and number four system prospect, right-handed pitcher Ben Kudrna.
