Star-Spangled Showdown: The Subway Series Heats Up on the Fourth of July

The New York Subway Series kicks off for the second time this season on Independence Day – and what better way to spend the Fourth of July than with some stars, strikes, (pin)stripes, and one of Major League Baseball’s fiercest rivalries?

While fireworks light up the New York City sky on the Fourth, the real show will take place in Queens. The Mets will host the Yankees at Citi Field for the second Subway Series of the 2025 season. Whether you're watching from the bleachers, a backyard BBQ, or a beach chair with a radio nearby, there’s no better way to celebrate the Fourth than with pinstripes, power hitters, and New York bragging rights on the line.

The last time these two teams faced off was back in May at Yankee Stadium. The Yankees took the series 2-1, outscoring the Mets 16-6. The matchup also marked Juan Soto’s first return to the Bronx, where fans made their feelings known – boos echoed throughout the stands each time he stepped up to the plate. Soto struggled at the plate, going 1-for-10 with four walks, and his lack of production played a role in the Mets dropping two of these games. The Yankees combined lights-out pitching with red-hot offense, allowing them to push past the Mets’ resilience.

Although the last Subway Series didn’t go the Mets' way, things were still going well for them at that point in the season. However, since the calendar hit June, both New York clubs have found themselves caught in a slump.

Despite New York baseball’s June collapse, the Subway Series remains extremely competitive, intense, and a great show for MLB fans. This year’s edition is even more special because it falls on America’s birthday.

The energy in Queens is always unmatched, and will be even more electric this weekend. Mets fans are prideful and will defend their team no matter what, while Yankees fans carry a history they’re proud of. I’ll be at the third game of the series on Sunday, and I'm eager to see the atmosphere at Citi Field firsthand.

Fans are hoping this Subway Series will be the spark both the slumping Bronx and the Flushing bombers need. With both teams looking to hit the reset button in July, ending their brutal stretch is top priority. With the All-Star break quickly approaching, the Yankees are desperately trying to hold on to the American League East, while the Mets are looking for resurgence to keep their Wild-Card hopes alive.

Ultimately, both the Yankees and Mets need to bounce back if they want a shot at playing this October. This series is their opportunity to do just that. So grab a hot dog, throw on your New York or Nowhere gear, and settle in. The city's biggest stage is set. Let the fireworks begin.
