The Boston Fleet Continue Their Home Streak With a 2-1 Win Over the Toronto Sceptres.

Wednesday, January 14, the Boston Fleet took the ice against the Toronto Sceptres to recognize mental health awareness. With a victorious 2-1 win over the Sceptres, the Fleet have found success in their home city of Boston, retaining a steady 5-0 home game record.

The Fleet’s Shay Maloney is a proud ambassador for Sophie’s Squad, a nonprofit with the mission of bringing awareness to, and improving, athletes' mental health, “It was really fun to get the opportunity to shed some light on it, and get the conversation started.”

The fleet came out strong with dynamic tape-to-tape passing between forward Alina Müller, and defensive pairing Captain Megan Keller and rookie Haley Winn. Their on-point passing led to a one-timer goal by Keller. With just enough contact in the crease and the goal under review, it was soon after overturned for goalie interference by Abby Newhook. Rookie Ella Huber showed impressive aggression on the forecheck, holding back Sceptres leading goal scorer Daryl Watts.

Following a scoreless first period, Müller kicked off the second period with a high tip received by the strong assist of Winn. This goal marks Müller’s 41st point in part with the Fleet franchise, making her the fleet all-time goal scorer, surpassing Hilary Knight. Head coach Kriss Sparre has nothing but high praise for Müller, “I think Müller was the best player on the ice tonight for both teams…so much of the work that she does on the ice goes unnoticed.” The period continued with a hungry Sceptres team looking for the opportunity, but came up short, unable to find the back of the net.

Coming out aggressive, Sophie Shirley receives a penalty for tripping, setting the Sceptres up for their first powerplay opportunity. Toronto looked to counteract the Fleet, who have only surrendered one goal on the penalty kill so far this season. It wasn’t enough to shut down the Fleet’s penalty kill system, leaving the Sceptres unsuccessful on the powerplay. At 10:08, Emma Maltais of the Sceptres received a penalty for illegal body checking with Shirley receiving a matching penalty for hooking, resulting in a 4 on 4.

Saulnier made a massive block to get the puck to Müller to bring it out of the defensive end. She passed the puck off to the stick of Shay Malloney who cleaned up her own rebound. The Sceptres quickly responded, with Maltais scoring a goal, coming up just one short of the Fleet.

The home victors will take the road Sunday, January 28, at Climate Pledge Arena to face the Seattle Torrent. The Sceptres will look to break their current streak, hungry for success in their upcoming game against Vancouver.
