Gerrit Cole made his first start of the season on June 19. He had been injured since spring training but was finally ready to come back and be the Yankees’ ace. The Yankees started off the season with a strong pitching rotation, it could only get better with Cole.
On March 28, Cole went on the 60-day IL because of right elbow inflammation. Yankees fans were upset by this news given that Gerrit Cole is not only the best Yankees pitcher, but was currently one of the best in the MLB.
Gerrit Cole’s Baseball History
In 2011, Cole was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates as the number one overall pick. Cole was expected to do great things in the league and was a very hyped-up player. He made his big league debut in June of 2013. In 2018, Cole was traded to the Houston Astros and stayed with them for two seasons. At the end of 2019, Cole was a free agent and the New York Yankees signed him; he has been doing great things for the team ever since then.
Prior to the 2024 season, Gerrit Cole was known to be one of the best pitchers in the MLB. Cole is a five-time all-star. For the 2023 All-Star game he was the starting pitcher for the American League Team. Cole was the winner of the Cy Young Award for the American League in 2023. The Cy Young Award is the most prestigious award a pitcher can win.

Gerrit Cole’s 2023 Season
Cole had a phenomenal season. He had an ERA of 2.63. In Cole’s 209 innings pitched, he had a total of 222 strikeouts, which was the third most in the American League. He recorded 15 wins and four losses. During the season Cole threw 3,281 pitches and batters only hit his pitches 157 times. Batters had an average of .206 facing Cole. For the season, Cole had 15 wins and four losses.
Gerrit Cole’s 2024 Season
Gerrit Cole worked hard in his triple-A rehab starts to prepare to be back on the mound with the Yankees. He played in three games and had a 0.73 ERA.

Cole played his first major league game of the season on June 19 against the Orioles and fans were happy to see him back on the mound. He pitched four innings and allowed three hits. Cole struck out five of the batters he faced. On June 25 Cole pitched again versus the Mets for the start of the Subway Series. He pitched four innings and allowed seven hits. He did not strike out any batters during this game. Cole recorded a loss for this game.
Although Cole had a rocky start to his season, the Yankees are still glad to have him back. Fans are hoping the Cy Young winner will clean things up for the Yankees since they have been struggling in the bullpen.
