The Match: Who's the Better Duo?

It takes two to make a thing go right, they said.

A golf match sponsored by Capital One which featured two time Superbowl Champions from the Kansas City Chiefs – Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce and four time NBA Champions from the Golden State Warriors – Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson. The tournament which was held at the Wynn in Las Vegas, Nevada onlast June 29, 2023 raised money for the No Kid Hungry campaign which aims to end childhood hunger in the United States. In addition to the overall charitable donations and endeavors, the participants competed in other mini contests such as the closest to the hole on par threes to raise even more money for the foundation.

In the end, the NFL won the bragging rights as Mahomes and Kelce tandem beat the Curry and Thompson tandem. The Chiefs duo were in control throughout the game and lost only one hole before clinching the game on the 10th hole.

Two duos, who are arguably the best in their respective sports, battling it out on theof the golf course for charity. But let’s take a look at the respective duo’s careers and what they have accomplished throughout their careers. A debate on who is the better duo?

Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson

Two-thirds⅔ of the core that make up the Warriors Dynasty. The Splash Brothers. The Greatest Shooters of all Time. Just a few words to describe nine-time NBA All Stephen Curry and five- time NBA All Star Klay Thompson. Both drafted by Golden State, with Curry drafted seventh overall in 2009 and Thompson drafted 11th overall in 2011. It wasn’t until 2015 when they won their first championship beating the Cleveland Cavaliers. A back to back championship in 2017 and 2018 and their most recent championship run in 2022 where Curry won Finals MVP. A few 3 point contest trophies won between the duo with Curry winning in 2015 and 2021 and Thompson winning in 2016 beating his fellow splash brother.

It hasn’t been all smooth sailing as Thompson was out for two years with back to back major injuries. He first tore his ACL in Game 6 of the 2020 NBA Finals and tore his Achilles in an offseason workout in 2021.

Curry has had injuries of his own throughout the years with questions about his ankle, a sprained ligament on his foot, an MCL sprain, and a broken thumb to name a few. Despite a rollercoaster season this past season, the duo will still hope to prove that this dynasty is far from over. But when all is said and done, there is no doubt the Splash Brothers are one of the top duos in the NBA and all of sports.

Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce

Unlike the Splash Brothers, the Chiefs duo of Kelce and Mahomes are relatively new. After winning their first Super Bowl in both of their careers in Super Bowl LIV in 2020 against Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and then winning their second just this year in Super Bowl LVII against Jalen Hurts and the Philadelphia Eagles, one can argue that this dynasty has just started. Patrick Mahomes was drafted 10th overall in the first round of the 2017 NFL draft. In his six year NFL career, Mahomes has thrown for 24,241 yards and 192 touchdowns. He was selected to play in two2 Pro Bowls, has won one1 Offensive Player of the Year award in 2018 , two2 MVP awards in 2018 and 2022, two2 Super Bowl MVP awards and two2 championships. He now clearly is the best quarterback in the league as of the moment with his clutch plays and crazy throws. But he wouldn’t be as successful without his reliable catcher in Travis Kelce. Kelce, on the other hand, was drafted 63rd overall in the third round. In his 10 year NFL career, he has been selected to five pro bowls, has 814 catches for 10,344 yards and has scored 72 touchdowns. In addition, He holds the NFL record for most consecutive and most overall seasons with 1,000 yards receiving by a tight end with seven7. Coming into the 2022 season, the Chiefs weren’t the top choice by majority of the public as the next Superbowl champions. Clearly, they proved everyone wrong. Now heading into the season, the Chiefs are certainly the team to beat as long as they have the star duo of Mahomes and Kelce.

If I had to pick the better duo, I would pick the Splash Brothers. Mainly because they have been dominating the league longer and have more accolades to show for. Clearly, Mahomes and Kelce have only just begun and still have a longer window of winning more Super Bowls in the upcoming years. There is no doubt that the two tandems are one of the best in their respective sports.
