University of Denver Secures Historic Frozen Four Win

The University of Denver added another chapter to its storied legacy this season with a thrilling run to the NCAA Men's Ice Hockey Frozen Four. As one of the top programs in the country, it was no surprise that they got there.

The season began with freshman goaltender Quentin Miller between the pipes, but a mid-season injury shifted the spotlight to fellow freshman Johnny Hicks. Hicks held his ground and led the team all the way to the championship.

In the semifinal game against the University of Michigan, captain Kent Anderson scored the winning goal in double overtime to secure a 4-3 victory. Hicks ended the game with 49 saves. This performance wasn't an anomaly for Hicks. Since taking over as the consistent starter in January, he remained undefeated in regulation, finishing the season 16-0-1 while setting a new single-season save percentage record.

Going into the third period, Denver was down by one, and outshot 21 to 5. The key goals were from senior Rieger Lorenz and freshman Kyle Chyzowski, who flipped the game, sealing a 2-1 comeback victory. Denver fought with blood, sweat, and tears this Frozen Four. Sam Harris required stitches after a violent collision with the boards against Michigan, while Boston Buckberger suffered a cut to his hand in the same game.

This victory marks the program's 11th national title, the most in college hockey history. Clinching this win, the head coach, David Carle, who has led the team since 2018 and has won three NCAA championships, has further cemented his dominance.

While the college season has come to an end, the journey continues for many of these players. Several members of this championship roster are already taking the next step to the professional level. Boston Buckberger has signed with the Columbus Blue Jackets, Rieger Lorenz with the Minnesota Wild, Eric Polhkamp with the San Jose Sharks, and Garret Brown with the Winnipeg Jets. Denver's championship impact will be felt well beyond the collegiate stage.
