“Am I supposed to be here?” As she walked into the Houston Rockets’ arena for her first shift as a social media coordinator, Hannah Peery’s mind raced with endless reasons why she felt out of place.  Being the youngest and newest person is hard enough, but she is also one of the only women in the room most of the time. 

Over the past five years, the sports media landscape has undergone drastic developments—one of the most notable shifts being the rise of the sports influencer.

This week I had the pleasure of speaking with Michelle Sutherby, who is the Social Media Content Designer for the Detroit Red Wings. While her primary role involves designing content for their social media channels, after seven years with the organization her responsibilities have evolved. Alongside her digital work, she has designed t-shirts, pucks, commemorative tickets, signage, and more.

This past week I had the amazing experience of speaking with Rachel Luscher. Rachel is the Digital Media Coordinator for the New York Islanders. Her job entails covering the team day-to-day and writing for the team website. During the season she covers each practice, game, and event that the team does and she writes features. During the offseason she continues to cover events, attends meetings for the upcoming season, does in-person reporting, and interviews.
