After a long wait and various conflicting reports, Capitals fans can finally celebrate: Alexander Ovechkin is returning to Washington for one more season. On July 2, the future Hall of Famer signed a one-year contract to return for his 22nd NHL season.
According to The Athletic, "The contract has a $1 million base salary plus a $3.25 million signing bonus and another $4.75 million performance bonus if Ovechkin hits the 10-game mark. In other words, if he indeed plays 10 games, Ovechkin will pocket a total of $9 million."
Despite widespread speculation that this could be his farewell tour, Ovechkin remains noncommittal about whether the 2026-27 season will be his last, saying, “We'll see. Right now, I'm focusing on coming back to D.C. and showing that I'm still a good player and I can help the team to win.”

The Capitals significantly upgraded their roster this offseason and appear poised to make a deep playoff run. Ovechkin, who will turn 41 before the season begins, is eager to see what the team can accomplish. “What management did, trading for new players and signing new guys, we have lots of depth in our lineup. I'm very excited for the team and for the fans, too, because on paper we have one of the best teams,” Ovechkin said. “Now we have to work for the Stanley Cup.”

The 13-time All-Star, Stanley Cup champion, and the only NHL player with more than 900 career goals enters the season with little left to prove. Instead, every game feels like a chance for fans to appreciate one of hockey's all-time greats while they still can.
Last season, Ovechkin added the crowning achievement to an already legendary career. Despite missing several weeks with a broken leg, he returned to complete the chase that captivated the hockey world. On April 6, 2025, "The Great Eight" scored his 895th career goal, surpassing Wayne Gretzky to become the NHL's all-time leading goal scorer.
With the scoring record finally his, Ovechkin enters the 2026-27 season without another major milestone left to chase. Instead, the focus shifts to helping Washington compete for another Stanley Cup while fans savor what could be the final chapter of one of hockey's greatest careers.
Ovechkin is not the only veteran player returning for the 2026-2027 campaign. Evgeni Malkin signed a one-year deal to remain with the Pittsburgh Penguins alongside Kris Letang and captain Sidney Crosby. Corey Perry is returning to the Los Angeles Kings, Claude Giroux re-signed with the Ottawa Senators, and there are rumblings that Patrick Kane could return to the Chicago Blackhawks.

With recent retirements from stars of this generation like Marc-André Fleury and Anže Kopitar, it has started to feel like the end of an era is approaching. Yet, for at least one more season, some of the NHL's most iconic names will still be on the ice. It will be a sad day when this generation eventually hangs up the skates, but for now, hockey fans can enjoy one more season with many of the players who have defined the league for nearly two decades.
Some fans had more than just Ovechkin's contract extension to celebrate. Over in Moscow, the Green Mama Club, a drinking society, has been gathering every Wednesday since the end of May at a bar called The Clovelly, hoping Ovechkin would stop by. On the seventh meetup, their patience paid off with the legend surprising the group by walking into the bar on July 8. He joined members for a beer, signed autographs, and posed for photos, turning Wednesday into a memorable night that few in attendance will ever forget.

Moments like this help explain why Ovechkin's impact has extended far beyond the stat sheet. For more than two decades, he has been one of hockey's most recognizable stars, inspiring fans across generations and helping grow the game around the world. Whether he's scoring historic goals in Washington or sharing a beer with fans in Moscow, his connection with the hockey community remains unmatched.
The 2026-2027 season may or may not be Ovechkin's last, but for now, Capitals fans and hockey fans everywhere have at least one more opportunity to watch one of the greatest players in NHL history take the ice. As the game continues to transition to a new generation of stars, Ovechkin's legacy is already secure. When his final chapter eventually arrives, hockey will be saying goodbye to one of the most memorable eras the sport has ever seen.
