The Face of the Franchise: The NHL’s Most Iconic Mascots

San Jose, CA. — The National Hockey League has gotten a lot of attention in the past few years. From spectacular seasons to breaking career records, the NHL has it all. Some teams are unique for their rookies or legendary players, and others for their mascots.

Let’s take a look at some of the best hockey mascots and why they’re so loved!

Anaheim Ducks: Wild Wing

The Anaheim Ducks' mascot, Wild Wing, had his inaugural year in 1993, which is referenced in Wild Wing's jersey, which currently features the number 93 on it. Easily recognizable from his goalie mask, people love the chaotic energy he brings and his famous stunts. One of his most famous stunts was when Wild Wing descended from the rafters onto the ice and skated away holding a Let’s Go Ducks flag. Wild Wing is even part of the Mighty Ducks: The Animated Series. It’s hard not to like Wild Wing since he’s also one of the earlier NHL mascots, and he does a great job of being part of the Ducks’ brand identity.

Los Angeles Kings: Bailey

The Kings' mascot, Bailey, wasn’t introduced to the world until 2007. Bailey’s name comes from a touching tribute to a Kings scout, Garnet “Ace” Bailey, who died in the 9/11 attacks. The lively lion wears 72 on the back of his jersey due to the weather in Los Angeles always being 72°F. Bailey can always be seen during the Go Kings Go chant at the games as he is always finding a way to keep the energy pumping through the stands. Whether it’s through firing t-shirts to the crowd or heckling opposing fans, he’s always bringing the energy to the arena. Bailey is not just a mascot for the Kings; his personality and involvement in the community make him part of the team.

Seattle Kraken: Buoy

Buoy is one of the more recent mascots as he appeared in 2022 during the Krakens' second NHL season. Buoy is a sea troll that is loved by people for his wild hairstyle and even wilder personality. He has a lot of energy and can be seen walking around the concourse dancing to music and doing mischievous activities such as hanging from the rafters. One of his recent antics was during the Kraken’s schedule release video that showcased his rivalry with Paul Bissonnette, known as Biz. We see Buoy hit Biz with boxing gloves and even pie him in the face. People love that he’s different. Although relatively new, Buoy has gained the hearts of many NHL fans.

Dallas Stars: Victor E. Green

Victor E. Green had his debut season in 2014, and while he may look a little weird, this alien plays a pivotal role with the Dallas Stars. Similar to Buoy, his weirdness attracts the love of many fans. Green can be seen doing funny skits that involve adults and kids, taking photos with fans all around the arena, and making memorable experiences for them. Green can also be found in the Dallas community, whether it’s at schools or charity events. By doing this, Green builds a relationship outside of the arena and connects with people in the community.

San Jose Sharks: Sharkie

Sharkie made his first appearance in 1992 and has been a key figure for the Sharks ever since. His funny personality and special stunts make fans want more. Recently, it was announced that Sharkie would be inducted into the Mascot Hall of Fame. One of the biggest reasons why Sharkie is so loved is because of his interactions with both the fans and athletes. Some of his notable interactions are with players, Will Smith and Macklin Celebrini. At games, he can be found walking around with his drum and banging it to bring a more buzzing atmosphere. Regardless of the Sharks' ups and downs, that hasn’t made Sharkie lose his loving and humorous personality.

New Jersey Devils: NJ Devil

NJ Devil had his debut season in 1993 after replacing the Devils' old mascot, Slapshot. NJ Devil’s energy and interactions make him stick to his name, as his devious actions make people gravitate toward this mascot. Rivalry games can be the best, as he can be found acting cocky towards opposing fans and leaning into his devilish personality. We can see his confidence shine not just through interactions with his enemies but also through his playful moments with fans. Similar to Sharkie, his interactions with the fans and players are what make him so lovable. One of his recent highlights that was pretty funny was the 2025-26 schedule release video, when we see NJ Devil playing dodgeball with opposing teams. In the end, we see defenseman, Dougie Hamilton, reveal himself as NJ Devil. NJ Devil encapsulates exactly what New Jersey is, and that’s why he’s so loved.

Philadelphia Flyers: Gritty

Last but not least is Gritty. How can we ever forget about Gritty? While Philadelphia sports teams are special in general, Gritty adds another layer to the love for Philly sports. Gritty can always, and I mean always, be found causing chaos. His googly eyes and orange fur make him easily identifiable. His name comes from the fact that the Flyers have been known as a gritty team. Gritty is loud and not afraid of anything. He can be found confronting opposing fans and causing mayhem all around the concourse. He is chronically online and consistently follows social media trends. Going back to earlier, Philadelphia sports teams are special. When they win playoff games, we can feel the rowdy energy of the crowd. We can also see Gritty lean into this, which makes him just another Philly enthusiast. He’s not just a mascot, but he’s a full-on Philly member.

These mascots are something else. While there are many more mascots, these are some of the best in the National Hockey League. Their personalities and chaotic energy bring more excitement and eyes to the league. What do you think? Are there any mascots that should’ve been on this list? Let me know what you think!
